Expectations of the established media

2/4/2015

As you might imagine, I have approached several established media outlets to subscribe to EditMob.  As you clearly can tell, they have declined (so far).

Though individually my contacts express delight in the service, the most common responses are
  1. We have editors.
  2. Our readers tolerate our mistakes in exchange for the volume of content.
These (particularly #1) generate spit takes from the journalists at these papers.

When I began EditMob, I was warned not to bother with the established media.  However, the sheer volume of errors (and therefore submissions) inevitably drew me to them.  Admittedly I had almost given up on this class of content (though I have pretty much given up on  Yahoo! and Huffington Post), but I will keep awarding bonus entries for local papers and The Business Journal.

I remember as a kid learning about the flexible spelling that was used in the 1800s and wondered how this could exist (chaos, I thought).  I would not declare that the level of mistakes in our current media is near that level, yet it has never been easier to correct mistakes.

EditMob has a policy of not shaming, however this is problematic as I do receive submissions for sites that are either apathetic or recalcitrant.

As these issues come up, I may reach out to you individually to hear your thoughts.

Shameless EditMob promotion

Portdaddia.com, an EditMob site focused on fatherhood, horticulture, and magic beans, has hypothesized a new video service for EditMob.  I am not sure we will be going there any time soon, but I like the dreaming.

Thanks Portdaddia!

Wired Article on self editing

12/24/2014

In August, Wired posted an article about EditMob's raison d'etre.  In short,

His comments are spot on.
  • "Frustratingly, they are usually words you know how to spell, but somehow skimmed over in your rounds of editing."
  • "the first thing your readers notice isn’t your carefully crafted message, it’s the misspelled word in the fourth sentence."

    The esteemed researcher quoted notes that the reason is our brain is writing (and presumably reviewing) for content.

40 errors that can make you look dumb

There are numerous lists of common typos, yet the problems persist.  As I have noted before, I believe these are often errors of fatigue or speed, not necessarily knowledge.

Click here to see Jeff Haden's list of 40 errors that can make you look dumb.

Keep on the look out for these.

EditMob serenity prayer

I think this speaks a lot to our community.  Thanks MobEditors.

Grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

If you have a modified version you would like to share, please do.

Here is mine.

Grant me the serenity
to accept the grammar I cannot change;
courage to report the typos I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.

OK it is not Yeats, let's see what you can do.
